Also known as Hong Dou Tang, the red bean soup is a common sweet dessert served in Asian countries, especially China.
It can be served cold or hot, based on your preference and it is the easiest dessert to make! I love making this for my family and the best thing about making it at home is that you can control the amount of sugar.
Whenever I eat this at restaurants, it was always too sweet so it's definitely healthier to make it at home :)
Serving: 3-4 pax
Ingredients:
- 1 pack red beans; approx. 200g RM4
- Rock sugar RM4 per pack
- 3 cups water
Method:
1. Soak the red beans in cold water for at least 2 hours before cooking.
2. Give the beans a slight rinse, drain the water, and set aside. Meanwhile, fill a medium pot with 3 cups of water.
3. Add the red beans into the pot and boil on medium heat for about 1 and a half hours.
*The time varies on the level of heat and how long you have soaked your red beans. You can stop boiling it once the liquid is thick and have a red & "powdery" texture.
4. Once done, turn the heat to low and add in rock sugar. You can add in according to your preference.
Some variations of this dessert includes adding sago and tapioca pearls.
That's it! Only 4 very simple steps.
