Whenever I watch Korean dramas, I will always crave for 1 food: Korean fried chicken.
It's a norm in Korea to have fried chicken with beer, as a snack among friends or even by yourself!
Being unable to have it here at restaurants because it is sooo pricy, I decided to make it at home!
I referred to a few recipes I found online and have come up with this recipe!
Also, in this recipe, I used an air fryer to make the fried chickens. However, you can also opt to fry over the stove with oil.
Ingredients:
Sweet sauce:
- 1 clove of garlic, grated
- approx. 1 tsp ginger, grated
- 1 tbsp gochujang
- 2 tbsp honey/maple syrup
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp water (for mixing)
- sesame seeds for topping
Spicy sauce:
- 2 cloves of garlic, grated
- approx. 1/2 tbsp ginger, grated
- 2 tbsp gochujang
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp water (for mixing)
- sesame seeds for topping
- 1 tsp Korean spicy powder/chili powder (optional; only if you want it extra spicy)
For chicken:
- Drumettes & wings (amount depends on how much you are making)
*the amount of seasoning used is based on 5 pieces of chicken drumettes.
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp white pepper
For frying:
- 1/2 cup Corn starch
- 2 cups multi-purpose flour
- 3 eggs, mixed well
Method:
1. Prepare the spicy sauce and sweet sauce and set aside in separate bowls. Wash, dry, and season the chicken parts and set aside. If you are using an air fryer, preheat to 180 degrees for 5 minutes while you prepare the chicken for frying.
2. Prepare the starch, flour, and egg and set up your "work space." (Combine the corn starch and flour in 1 bowl.)
3. First, coat the chicken in 1 layer of flour mixture. Second, coat with egg. And thirdly, coat with another layer of flour.
4. Once all the chicken is fully coated, put them into the air fryer. Add 1 tbsp of oil and spread out evenly among the chickens and fry for 20-25 minutes. When using an air fryer, leave some space between the chickens so that they can be cooked thoroughly and be crispy. Thus, if you are making for a large number of people, I think it's better to fry them over the stove.
5. While the chickens are cooking, make the spicy sauce. Use the sauce mixture and just heat them in a pan.
6. Once the chickens are done, add them onto the pan and coat them well with the sauce.
7. Do the same for the sweet sauce. For the original flavor, there is no sauce and is ready to be eaten right when it's done cooking.
8. Top them off with some sesame seeds and place them nicely on the plate. Serve with any carbonated drinks that you like! :)
